Homelessness and Parole: A Survey of Denver's Shelters

Colorado Criminal Justice Reform Coalition; August, 2009; 26 pages.

In the spring of 2007, The Piton Foundation released a report indicating a quarter of the people on parole in the Denver metro area resided either in homeless shelters or other temporary housing.  The Department of Corrections has not historically tracked the specific number of parolees who have been released homeless, so it is not possible to determine whether there has been an increase in homelessness among parolees over time. Because of the gap in information about homeless parolees, CCJRC decided to conduct this survey in order to better understand the drivers of homelessness among parolees and the experiences of both homeless parolees and shelter providers.
