Housing Justice! received the 2007 Faith Based Service Award from the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless. At the annual CCH conference in May, we were recognized for creating a new program:
Aurora Warms the Night
This program provides shelter for homeless men, women and children during severe winter weather. Our role was bringing together local faith leaders and other community stakeholders to create a new partnership with passion and capacity to meet this need. We discussed the issue, examined many possible options for a shelter site, and finally determined that a motel voucher program would best serve Aurora.

History of Housing Justice!

Housing Justice! was a statewide interfaith organization that incorporated in June 2001 in response to a longstanding affordable housing shortage in Colorado.
One in every five Coloradoans struggles to afford food, clothing, medical treatment and transportation due to the high cost of housing. Housing Justice! believes everyone needs a place to live and that this lack of affordable housing exists due in large part to a lack of awareness and understanding. Addressing this need will also require significant financial resources. Our goal is to teach people to think, talk and act differently about those who struggle to find or to keep affordable housing.
Our goal is to make affordable housing available to all Coloradoans by the year 2022. Housing Justice! joins with communities experiencing a shortage of affordable housing to strengthen their capacity to produce or preserve adequate affordable housing by:
-
Educating the faith community and issuing a call to action
-
Providing an alternative to the voice of indifference and to “NIMBY” opposition
-
Participating in local non-partisan political efforts to address affordable housing issues
-
Actively promoting the creation of a Colorado affordable housing investment fund
-
Helping to catalyze partnerships among faith communities and housing agencies, builders, developers and financial organizations toward the creation of new housing solutions

| SALIDA |

In Salida, escalating land values and changing land use patterns are hot topics of community discussion. Faith
leaders participated in these
discussions, specifically raising the concerns of low to moderate income working residents.
A series of community forums is being held to inform and engage people of faith in a wider discussion of the long term implications of land use and housing issues. |

| TRINIDAD |

People of faith and community leaders in Trindiad initiated a new transitional housing program for low-income families called Haven of Hope.
The first home for this project has been obtained under a program with the U.S. Dept.
of Agriculture Rural Develop-ment and will be leased for $1/year.
A core group of stakeholders entered into a partnership to lease, manage and provide services for the Haven of Hope residents.
